The shade

Where do you want to go to first? "Sebastian asks Rose, while the nauseating mucky smell of new furniture fills his nostrils. Below them shrill screams echo from the ball pool. He massages his temples, while Rose  realizes how cute she thinks those kids are. For a moment she puts her hand on her flat stomach.

Hopefully she does not start about babies again, he thinks. Hopefully he does not dodge my conversations about children again, she thinks. Rose fishes a list from her pocket and hands it to her boyfriend. The paper creaks when Sebastian opens it.

"Lampshade, cushions, side table." He looks at her. "My father still has a spare lampshade. Did I tell you that? "

Rose grinds her teeth. "Yes," she says, as she wipes a dark strand of hair behind her ear. "But we have to go through the entire store anyway. We might as well look around, right? "She struggles to resist rolling her eyes. Why does he always want second-hand goods? And did he not know how ugly that thing is?

Sebastian stretches his shoulders for a second and thinks about the unpaid bills. Why does she always want to have everything brand new?  That lampshade is still fine! No, do not argue, he quickly says to himself. They have done enough of that lately.
"Sure, honey," he says, but it doesn't sound convincing, fake even,  he hopes Rose doesn't notice He is lucky.

"That would be nice above our dining table, don't you think?" Rose says, pointing to a purple shade.

Sebastian frowns and takes a look at the monstrous thing. And then she says my fathers shade is ugly? he thinks. Be subtle, he says to himself. He clears his throat.
"Maybe we should still look around for a bit."

Rose feels the anger bubble up inside of her. Why does he always have to criticize her taste? No, don't get not angry, keep it to yourself. Be the adult. Or just pretend it was his idea.
"Did not you say our apartment could use a little more colour?"

Sebastian looks at her. She manipulates him. He thinks of his fathers words: "it's not worth the hassle." Come on, Sebastian, he says to himself. Someone has to do something to steer the relationship to calmer waters. Maybe this lampshade will save your relationship. And maybe she will let you have your way with something else. He studies the thing better.
"Maybe you're right," he says. "It's actually pretty cool."

Satisfied Rose tucks the lampshade under her arm. Victory, she thinks. She has saved their relationship for today. Maybe she can even start about children tonight. She proposes to get some Chinese food, Sebastians favorite food, to give him something.

Victory, he thinks, as he takes her hand. haven't I done this perfectly? Perhaps she forgets about children for a while now, he thinks to himself. Satisfied, he looks at the shade under Rose's arm, which he could almost kiss.
